The Great Plains Recreation Facility is bringing ice sports to a part of southeast Calgary that hasn’t had them before.

The 80,000 square foot facility has two ice rinks that will be used for hockey, sledge hockey, ringette and figure skating. There are 600 seats, a dryland training space, multi-purpose rooms, food services and a pro shop.

The facility, located at 5749 76 Avenue S.E., cost $33 million, with the province contributing some of the funding.

The mayor handed over a giant key to Canlan Ice Sports on Tuesday to celebrate the organization winning the contract to operate the centre, and said it’s places like this that make Calgary great.

“This sort of investment in sport and recreation is really about an investment in opportunity,” he said. “It's about an investment in opportunity for young people, for everyone in our community, as I always say, to lead a great Canadian life."

The official grand opening event will be held in November.
