Could a giant elastic band and a chair be enough to help Calgarians control their type 2 diabetes?  A Calgary researcher is hoping to find out if that is the case.

Previous studies have shown that weight training helps control type 2 diabetes and it’s hoped that resistance training using long elastic bands and a chair for support will offer the same benefit.

Dr. Ron Sigal, says “in theory it should build strength improve glucose control, but we don't know for sure that it does”.

The weight training was able to improve the way the body used glucose and help patients with type 2 diabetes avoid the dangerous blood sugar levels.

Sara Brodsky has type 2 diabetes and so far she’s managing it with diet and oral medication.  She would like to avoid having to start insulin injections and is participating in the study.

Brodsky prefers to use a resistance training program, rather than going to the gym to lift weights.

The resistance training can be done at home, so it fits into Brodsky’s busy schedule.  Brodsky says”it's great you can do it any time of the day, I'm busy I'm working I can't always make a class for ten o'clock every morning”.
