The planned closure of a northwest thoroughfare has several business owners concerned over customer access to their establishments.
Beginning Monday morning, and scheduled to last until December, all lanes of Symons Valley Rd. will be closed between 144 Ave. N.W. and Sage Meadows Circle. The City of Calgary is halting traffic to accommodate upgrades to utility lines and the road itself, in preparation for future residential development.
Symons Valley Road is the main route Calgarians take to the Symons Valley Ranch Farmers’ Market and the Roadhouse Restaurant.
“When I heard (of the closure) I was shocked,” said Javier Santos of Prairie Farms. “We had big plans for the summer and that road closure is going to affect us pretty big in the business.”
Bruce Gillis of Blue Door Oil & Vinegar hopes the closure will not dissuade customers from making the trek to the popular market.
“We are going to see a slowdown but we are hoping people won't steer away from the little detour to get around and still get to the market,” said Gillis.
During the closure, traffic will be detoured to Sage Hill Dr. while heavy trucks will be rerouted to Shaganappi Trail.
Localized access to Symons Valley Rd. will be available to residents of:
- Sage Meadows Circle
- Sage Meadows Way
- Sage Meadows Terrace
