The University of Calgary has been named the top-ranked university in Canada, the second best post-secondary institution in North America, and the ninth best in the world, among universities established after 1964.

The Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Limited Top 50 under 50 World Universities Rankings, released on Tuesday, found the University of Calgary, founded in 1966, trails only the University of California at Irvine among young North American universities.

Universities are ranked in six categories related to research, teaching, employability, and internationalization. The rankings take into consideration the contributed responses from industry and academic experts.

In 2013, the U of C was ranked 13 in the worldwide QS rankings.

"Our improvement in the QS 50 under 50 rankings clearly demonstrates that the University of Calgary is firmly positioned among the best young institutions in the world," said Elizabeth Cannon, president of the University of Calgary. "For the University of Calgary to move into the top 10 against such impressive global competition, really speaks to our growing reputation and the effort our university community is making to lead as a global intellectual hub."

The university has been the top ranked Canadian university in the 50 under 50 rankings for four consecutive years.
