Fire investigators are piecing together the cause of a Sunday morning house fire at a home on Hawkwood Dr. N.W.

Crews responded to the home at approximately 6:00 a.m. and were greeted by the sight of thick smoke billowing from the house.

“A substantial amount of smoke,” says CFD Battalion Chief Bill Peters.  “The initial report was that there may have been a working fire reported immediately and they initiated the interior attack to ensure that all of the occupants had exited and were accounted for.”

Firefighters extinguished the blaze from inside the home, successfully preventing the fire from spreading to neighbouring properties.

Three adults and five pets were in the home at the time of the fire and all escaped the house unharmed.

Fire crews believe the fire may have originated at a couch, and investigators will be looking into a number of possible causes, including whether someone had fallen asleep smoking.

Officials have not released the extent of the damage the home sustained in the fire.
