Police shot a man in Calgary's downtown on Tuesday and investigators are looking into whether the events that led up to the shooting are connected to a series of violent incidents that happened earlier in the day.

Calgary police were called to a hit and run between a suspected stolen SUV and a cyclist at Dermot Baldwin Way and 4th Avenue S.E. at about 4:30 p.m.

Officers were told that the vehicle intentionally hit the cyclist and then fled the scene.

The vehicle reappeared on Dermot Baldwin Way and drove at the officers. One officer was almost hit but managed to dive out of the way and take cover in a police van, which was then hit by the suspect SUV.

A second officer on the scene fired at the SUV and the vehicle continued on before coming to a stop on Riverfront Avenue S.E.

Police took a man, who was shot, and a woman into custody. The man was taken to hospital and remains in non-life threatening condition.

The cyclist was also transported to hospital in serious condition and is undergoing surgery.

Police say a third possible suspect may still be at large.

Investigators say the events downtown may be related to a series of violent events, involving attempted car thefts and dangerous driving incidents, that happened in the city earlier in the day.

Calgary police shut down a number of roads near Riverfront Avenue for the investigation and the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has been called in to investigate.

No officers were injured in the incident.
