The baby elephant at the Calgary Zoo is extremely ill.

Veterinarians say Malti has been diagnosed with elephant herpesvirus.

Blood tests done on Friday confirmed the young calf has the virus.

It is usually fatal. Only four elephants in captivity have recovered from it.

Malti was born in August of last year and is being given antiviral medication.

But zoo keepers say the animal's condition is "extremely guarded" and they will be giving an update on Saturday.
