The Better Business Bureau is warning of scams related to flood donations and relief.
The BBB says people should consider giving money only to known, reputable businesses with an established track record.
Watch out for vague appeals for cash, and be careful about who you give money to online.
"Tragedies inspire people to give," says Sandra Crozier-McKee, president and CEO of the BBB serving Southern Alberta and East Kootenay. "But, tragedies also inspire scammers to take advantage of that generosity. Social media, in particular, makes it very easy to reach a lot of people quickly, when emotions are running high and people feel the need to take action, any action, to help."
The BBB urges people to do their due diligence before writing a cheque.
Anyone who receives a suspicious charitable solicitation should report it.
