Calgary police have identified both of the victims of a deadly stabbing on Sunday and say second-degree murder charges are pending against the suspect.

Emergency crews were called to a home in the 6400 block of Penbrooke Drive S.E. at around 8:30 p.m. on May 4 for reports of a stabbing.

One woman was found dead at the scene and another woman was taken to hospital where she later died. A third woman was also taken to hospital with serious non-life threatening injuries and was later released.

Police have identified the woman who died at the scene as Sanjula Devi, 36, of Calgary, and say she is believed to be the estranged wife of the suspect.

The woman who died in hospital has been identified as 29-year-old Fahmida Velji-Visram.

Autopsies were conducted on Monday and Tuesday and it was determined that both women died as a result of a stabbing.

Staff Sergeant Doug Andrus with the CPS Homicide Unit says that a confrontation started when one of the victims went to the home to pick up property.

“She went to the residence with a friend of hers, her friend’s mother, and a young girl,” he said. “It was while they were in the residence, in the basement suite, that a confrontation occurred, where both victims were stabbed.”

Andrus said the third victim, who is the landlord of the building, responded to the confrontation in the basement. “She tried to intervene, and as a result, she received a stab wound.”

The suspect was caught a short time later and was transported to hospital suffering from self-inflicted injuries.

Police say they have not been able to speak to him yet but that charges of second-degree murder and aggravated assault are pending.
