Mother Nature’s icy grip on the City of Calgary appears to be loosening, but that has opened up a concern of flooding due to the record amount of snow that’s fallen over the past few weeks.

Reg Richardson, manager of All Spray Inc., says that he’s been fielding a lot of calls from businesses that have asked for help in removing ice and snow.

“There’s so much snow built up on the ground, it plugs [the eavestrough] and it gets frozen and can’t go nowhere.”

Richardson has also been hard at work removing icicles from the sides of homes and buildings.

“It’s probably about four or five hours to get rid of most of the icicles.”

He says he’s seen them get to about eight feet long and that’s pretty dangerous for anyone walking by.

“That’s why we’re out here.”

The warm weather has also brought out a lot of people to enjoy the sun after having been cooped up for far too long.

“Finally a turn around, finally,” said Darryl Joy. “It’s been long awaited. Winter started too early this year in October.”

He says his bulldog Lester is enjoying the temperatures too.

“He’s been doing his snow angels out here, so he’s having a good time.”

A number of restaurants on 17 Avenue have also opened up their patios for customers in the warm weather.

The Ship and Anchor, National on 17th and Trolley 5 were all serving cold ones to customers out in the sun.
