Calgary police have released video images in the hope that someone will come forward with new information in the murder of a 23-year-old man outside a southwest nightclub in 2004.

Emergency crews were called to a parking lot acorss from NYLA nightclub in the 1200 block of 1 St. S.W. just after 3:00 a.m. on Sunday, January 25, 2004 for reports of an injured man.

Shane Johnson was rushed to hospital but died a short time later.

An autopsy confirmed he died as the result of a stabbing.

Police believe that he left the nightclub on the night in question and had a minor verbal exchange with another man.

Johnson became separated from his group of friends and police say that an unidentifed man stabbed him from behind and then fled the scene.

The suspect is described as:

  • Black male
  • 173 cm or 5'8" tall
  • 54 Kg or 120 lbs
  • wearing green jacket and running shoes

Police released a video on Friday based on new information in the case and are hoping someone will come forward with the identity of Johnson's attacker.

Investigators believe the suspect bought a ticket to Vancouver at the Greyhound bus station a few days later under the name of Yosef, and say he also goes by the name of 'T' or 'Tyson'. The man was wearing a long, dark-green jacket with yellow lining and a white doo-rag while at the bus station.

“Homicide investigations are very large and very complex and in the course of them it is not unusual to collect volumes of information and sometimes at the time of the incident it’s hard to determine what certain pieces mean and what is important and what is relevant. Recently we’ve come into information specifically about the names that I’ve listed here today and with that information we were able to go back and look at the pieces that existed in the investigation that we had and determine that the person at the bus depot is going to be the person that we’re interested in,” said Grant Miller, Staff Sgt. CPS Homicide Unit.

Police are also looking to speak with the two other people seen with the suspect in the video footage.

One is a male wearing a grey hoodie with the hood pulled up and the other is a female wearing dark clothing and a dark doo-rag.

Police say they are still working on a motive for the attack but that the description of the suspect at the time matches the description of the man at the bus terminal.

"We are getting a bit of conflicting information that is there something that led up to this, or was this just a random meet or if this was a targetted attack. We're still trying to determine those exact specifics of this situation," said S. Sgt Miller.

Miller says in most entertainment district crimes there are dozens of witnesses.

"There are dozens of witnesses involved in this who we took statements from at the time. We are in the process of seeking some of those people out, we have spoken to some, we're in the process of  speaking to others now," said Miller.

Miller says investigators are getting closer to finding those reponsible for Johnson's death.

"We think we're close and we think with coming to the media today that it's going to help us maybe solidify the last few pieces that we need to," said Miller.

Anyone who may have information about the identities or whereabouts of any of the people in the images, or any other information about the homicide, is asked to call police at 403-266-1234 or Crime Stoppers anonymously using any of the following methods:
