A local developer has successfully acquired the former home of the Shawnee Slopes Golf Course.

Cardel Homes has purchase the land rights from Geo-Energy Enterprises and plans to build 1,700 homes, comprised of condominium apartments, townhouses and single family estate homes, in the 53 hectare area south of Fish Creek Park.

Cardel plans to build homes in clusters away from major roads to preserve the 100-year-old trees in the area.

Redevelopment of the golf course has been hotly contested for over five years but the Shawnee-Evergreen Community Association and city council members are praising Cardel's approach.

“We knew someone had to develop it so I'm glad someone is going forward with it,” says Ward 7 Councillor Druh Farrell.  “I think it's a very good plan and it'll be an asset to the city.”

Construction of showhomes is slated to begin in the spring of 2014.
