Emergency crews were called out to two gas line breaks in the northwest on Thursday.

The first gas leak was in the 200 block of 11 Street NW and several homes in the area were evacuated.

Calgary police say a gas line was damaged at about 9:00 a.m. and 19 homes were evacuated as a precaution.

Crews shut off the gas to about 400 homes in the area and activated the Municipal Emergency Plan.

The Emergency Operation Centre was opened and staffed to coordinate the response.

Police closed roads between 10 Street and 14 Street and 5 Avenue and Kensington Road N.W. and established a perimeter around the area to ensure the safety of residents.

Firefighters and ATCO crews worked to repair the line as quickly as possible.

ATCO crews went door-to-door to relight furnaces and firefighters and police checked on residents.

While this was happening, a second gas line break was reported in the Crowfoot business area.

City and ATCO crews responded and also repaired that line.
