The City of Calgary is honouring 16 citizens on Wednesday night for their contribution to the community and CTV Calgary Anchor Darrel Janz with be the recipient of a Community Achievement Award.

The Calgary Awards recognize those individuals and organizations for their outstanding achievements and significant contributions for improving the quality of life in Calgary.

Darrel Janz is active in a number of community initiatives and will receive the Community Advocate Award.

The veteran broadcaster was also honoured earlier this week with the Hall of Fame Award during the Western Association of Broadcasters annual conference at the Banff Springs Hotel.

  • Grant MacEwan Lifetime Achievement – Dr. Eldon Smith
  • Arts – Grant Reddick
  • Commerce – Calgary’s Child Magazine
  • Community Advocate – Darrel Janz
  • Community Advocate Organization – Fresh Start Recovery Centre
  • Education – Dr. Mary O’Brien
  • Heritage – John Kerr
  • Youth – Sheliza Kassam

The Environmental Achievement Awards

  • Corporate – Avi Urban
  • Educational Institution – Calgary Board of Education: Waste Reduction Initiative
  • Individual – Ryan Scott
  • Not-For-Profit – Calgary Folk Music Festival

The Signature Award

  • Jean Grand-Maître

The City of Calgary W.O. Mitchell Book Prize

  • Marcello Di Cintio  - “Walls: Travels Along the Barricades”  

The Award for Accessibility

Mayor Naheed Nenshi and members of City Council will hold a special ceremony on Wednesday, June 12 at 7:30 in the Calgary Municipal Complex to honour the recipients.
