A male cyclist has been hit and killed by the CTrain while he was crossing the tracks in northeast Calgary.

Police say a 51 year old man that lives in the area had stopped on his bicycle on the northbound tracks at 36 St. and 20 Ave. N.E. while watching for the southbound train.

They are still investigating why, but the man did not see the northbound train coming at the same time.

He was struck and dragged for about 30 metres by the train.

The signals were functioning properly and the barricade arms were down.

He was pronounced dead on scene by EMS.

Calgary Transit had shuttle buses in place to ferry commuters between Marborough and Rundle Stations.

The trains have since resumed regular service.

The Traffic Unit is investigating and are interviewing witnesses.

This is the third fatality in as many weeks on the northeast line of the LRT.

Inspector Darren Cave says the whole thing was an accident and hopes that the string of fatalities are just a run of bad luck.
