One person is dead following a Sunday morning crash in the city’s southeast.

Shortly before 6:00 a.m., emergency crews responded to the southbound lanes of Deerfoot Trail, approaching the Anderson Rd/Bow Bottom Trail exit, following reports of flames emanating from an overturned vehicle.

Officers located a 2004 Jeep fully engulfed in flames and wrapped around a light standard. Firefighters extinguished the flame by applying foam to the vehicle but the driver, the lone occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The identity of the deceased has not been confirmed and the charred licence plate is illegible.

Police have not confirmed if speed or alcohol contributed to the crash.

The CPS Traffic Reconstruction Unit attended the crash scene. The southbound lanes of Deerfoot Trail were closed between the Southland Drive overpass and the Anderson Rd. exit for several hours.

Police reopened the road at 12:15 p.m.

Anyone who witnessed the crash, or the events leading up to the single vehicle collision, is asked to contact the CPS Traffic Section at 403-567-4000.
