An early evening head-on crash on the road dividing the southwest neighbourhoods of Woodbine and Woodlands has sent two to hospital.
Shortly before 7:00 p.m., police, EMS and firefighters responded to a section of 24 Street Southwest, south of Anderson Road, following reports of a collision involving a Ford Escape and a Toyota Highlander.
The two drivers, the lone occupants of the SUVs, were found unconcious. CFD crews extricated the drivers from the damaged vehicles..
Police officials confirm the two drivers were transported to hospital by ambulance to the Foothills Medical Centre.
The driver of the Ford Escape, a man believed to be in his 60s, was transported in life threatening condtion while the female driver of the Toyota Highlander, believed to be in hers 60s, is considered to be in non-life threatening condition with serious injuries.
EMS officials confirm the male patient's status was upgraded to non-life threatening during transport.
An investigation into suspected impaired driving on the part of the Ford Escape driver is underway.
“At approximately 6:30, Calgary police were called by witnesses at a restaurant north of this location saying that someone was leaving there that had far too much to drink and was insisting on getting in his vehicle,” said Sgt. Joerg Gottschling of the CPS traffic section.
Staff at the Boston Pizza location in Oakridge, in the 2500 block of Southland Drive S.W., confirm to CTV Calgary that they had unsuccessfully attempted to stop a customer who had been drinking from entering his vehicle.
According to the unnamed staff members, the man was last seen travelling southbound on 24 Street Soutwest in the Ford Escape.
Police say the southbound Ford Escape crossed the centre median and struck the oncoming Toyota Highlander.
A section of 24 Street between Anderson Road and Woodpark Avenue was closed to northbound and southbound traffic for several hours.
