A new ThinkHQ poll is suggesting a shift among decided voters in Calgary and shows the NDP is gaining momentum in Alberta.

When asked who they would support if an election were held today, the decided vote indicated that:

  • 39 percent would choose the NDP
  • 27 percent Wildrose
  • 20 percent PC
  • 9 percent Liberal
  • 4 percent Alberta Party
  • 1 percent other

In Calgary, support from 641 decided voters breaks down as follows:

  • 31 percent support NDP
  • 28 percent Wildrose
  • 23 percent PC
  • 11 percent Liberal
  • 6 percent Alberta Party
  • 1 percent other

(Initial undecided 13 percent / margin of error +/-3.9)

The leaders of the NDP and Wildrose say they are concentrating on the closing days of the campaign and say they are not thinking about working together based on poll numbers.

“What we’re focusing on right now is election day and that’s the responsible thing to do. We have an election, it’s a democratic process, Albertans are going to make that choice, pollsters don’t make that choice so because that’s the way these decisions are made, it makes strategic sense for us to be focused on election day and that’s what we’re doing right now,” said Rachel Notley, NDP Leader.

“What we will do is focus on those priorities and we will not compromise those priorities or principles and in particular, we will not vote to raise taxes on Albertans and the other parties are all concentrating on raising taxes and that rules out any opportunity for a coalition with the Wildrose, with anyone,” said Brian Jean, Wildrose Leader.

The poll was conducted from April 26 to 28 and sampled a total of 2114 Albertans with a margin of error of +/- 2.1 percentage points at a 95 percent confidence level.
