A national conference is hoping to find a better way to address Canada's increasing homeless numbers.
The three-day conference on homelessness and affordable housing began at the University of Calgary on Wednesday.
The conference is bringing together policymakers, politicians, academics, students, doctors, service providers, current and former homeless people.
"Conferences such as this create momentum and opportunities for important conversations leading to meaningful actions," says Gayla Rogers, the dean of the faculty of social work.
Reg Knelsen has been homeless for six years and felt a need to attend this year's conference. He wants to dispel some common myths. "We are people, we have dreams and we do pursue them. We don't all live under the bridge," says Knelson.
The sessions will focus on creative research, practices and initiatives that will help deal with the costly issue of homelessness and affordable housing.
Every year, up to $6-billion is spent on homelessness in Canada.
