A Lethbridge court has handed down a guilty verdict in the trial of a man accused of killing a retired Vulcan farmer in 2012.
Timmy Engel, 37, of Claresholm, is on trial for first-degree murder and indignity to human remains in connection to the death of 77-year-old Otto Bunty Loose.
Loose disappeared from his home in January of 2012 and RCMP say someone repeatedly tried to take money out of the senior's bank account shortly after he went missing.
A subsequent investigation led police to believe that Loose had been kidnapped from his home on January 8, 2012.
Loose's remains were discovered in the woods near Bragg Creek about a week after his disappearance.
Over the last three weeks jurors in the Lethbridge courtroom have watched 15 hours of graphic re-enactment footage and began deliberating on Monday afternoon.
On Monday, just after 7:00 p.m. Engel was found guilty on both charges.
A first-degree murder conviction carries an automatic life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years.
Engel was ordered to submit a DNA sample and was given a lifetime weapons prohibition. He was also sentenced to three years for indignity to human remains and that sentence will run concurrently.
