RCMP is advising motorists to use extreme caution on highways in southern Alberta after several vehicles were involved in crashes because of icy road conditions.

Police were called to the scene of a jackknifed truck on Highway 2 near Cayley, Alberta on Tuesday afternoon and say two other semis were involved in minor crashes on the same stretch of highway.

RCMP and the Integrated Traffic unit say those travelling on the highway should use extreme caution.

The roads in the area are snow covered with icy sections and police are urging drivers to slow down and drive to the conditions.

Late Tuesday, RCMP issued a road closure advisory for Highway 3 between Coleman and Sparwood effective as of 6:00 p.m.

Police say the closure is due to bad weather and zero visibility. Crews are monitoring the conditions but it is not known when the highway will reopen.
