The Salvation Army surpassed what it considered to be an ambitious fundraising goal for this holiday season.

The Lethbridge chapter collected $232,000 through its Christmas Kettle Campaign, pushing past its $220,000 target.

Kettles were placed in seven locations throughout the city this year, from Nov. 26 all the way up to Christmas Eve.

Volunteers also participated in events, including the 55th annual Coffee and Carols, as well as the national ‘Fill the Kettle’ day.

Zach Marshall, the chapter’s community ministries officer said the large response from the community is truly a testament to how much Lethbridge residents give back to those in need.

“It means that our community are putting the trust in us to do the good work that we do and it's not a responsibility that we take lightly,” Marshall said.

“We really appreciate the community support that we have,” he added, “especially as the demand for our services are on the rise, we're happy that the community is rallying around us so that we can continue to provide the essential service that we do.”

Funds raised through the Christmas Kettle Campaign will now go towards Toys for Tots, a food assistance program, and other year-round initiatives.
