About 2 a.m. Friday morning, police were called to an apartment building in the 400 block of Macleod Trail S.E. after a man was reportedly threatened by another resident.
When officers arrived at the scene, the suspect in the incident had barricaded himself inside his apartment.
When he eventually came out, he was holding what appeared to be a handgun.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has since confirmed that the gun was a BB gun.
One of the officers fired two shots, at which point the man went back inside his unit and he died soon afterwards.
The officer who fired has been on the force for four years. ASIRT will continue to investigate.
The Tactical Team was called to the scene and several floors of the building were evacuated.
The Calgary Fire Department was also called to the building after a large amount of smoke began to billow from the unit. They soon found that a pot had been left on the stove.
Several roads in the area were also shut down as a result of the incident, but have since reopened and the residents have returned home.
Residents of Langin Place, the building at the centre of the investigation, are still in the dark about what exactly happened on Friday morning.
Langin Place is a supportive housing building for single men struggling with addiction and mental health issues.
"I'm on the first floor and I didn't really hear a heck of a whole lot," said Trent Harper, who lives on the first floor in the building. "I just heard we had to immediately evacuate. I was wondering as to why. I heard it was because there'd been some gunshots."
Paul Hunter has lived in the building for 15 years and has never seen any trouble there before. "I was sleeping when I heard the door being knocked on. When I answered the door, it was the police. They said that we had to get out of the room."
It's still not clear what initally provoked the incident.
