Police have now charged an Okotoks man in connection with a crash that killed a young girl last September.

At about 6:30 p.m. on September 20, 2013, police were called to the scene of 52 St. and Erin Woods Drive S.E.

They say a pickup truck was southbound on 52 Street when the driver allegedly ran a red light, crashing into a minivan, which was eastbound on Erin Woods Drive.

An 11-year-old girl, a passenger inside the minivan, was killed instantly.

Two others in the minivan, a 53-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman, suffered serious injuries.

The driver of the pickup truck suffered minor injuries.

Investigators have since determined the truck driver as being impaired. They also say he was speeding.

Karl Schwarz, 29, of Okotoks has been charged with:

  • Impaired driving causing death
  • Two counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm
  • Impaired driving over .08 causing death
  • Two counts of impaired driving over .08 causing bodily harm
  • Dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death
  • Two counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing bodily harm

There is no information on his next court appearance.
