A man set himself on fire outside the Harry Hays building.

The incident happened on Thursday at 10 a.m. in the 100 block of 4 Avenue S.E.

Calgary EMS says the 40-year-old doused himself with a flammable liquid then set himself on fire.

"I see some guy, he's in flames, all his body, backpack. I was very scared because all of his body is in flames," says Fernando Sanchez, a witness.

Sanchez says people were trying to help EMS put the flames out.

Paramedics treated the man who is believed to be in his early 40's.

He has burns to 40 percent of his body including his back, face, hands and legs.

The man was taken to Foothills Hospital in stable condition.

There is no official explanation for why the man lit himself on fire, but a source tells CTV News the man may have been upset because he was about to be deported back to Algeria.
