This summer the city plans to close two lanes of Memorial Drive as part of a pilot project.
Every Sunday for the month of August, the city will close both eastbound lanes of the road between 4 Street and 10 Street N.W.
The eastbound lanes will be open for use by pedestrians and cyclists.
The westbound lanes will be shared between drivers heading east and west on Memorial Drive.
The city's roads department says any overflow traffic impacted by the Memorial Drive closure can head north and use 16 Avenue.
Alderman Druh Farrell says the closure will help promote physical activity.
"We've got lots of people there now and we're trying to encourage more. It's about building a healthy city, building a vibrant city and getting people a chance to get out there and enjoy the river," says Farrell.
Farrell says if the pilot project is successful it could be expanded to other neighbourhoods.
