A bloody battle is being waged in Alberta between Calgary and Edmonton emergency workers but it is all for a good cause.

The Calgary Police Service, Fire Department, The City of Calgary's Public Safety Communications, Emergency Medical Services and Alberta Health Services are all involved in the Sirens for Life Blood Donor Challenge.

Crews from the two cities compete against each other to see who can donate the most blood to the Canadian Blood Services.

It is the 10th year for the event and last year Edmonton won by less than a 2.5 percent margin.

Calgary Police Chief Rick Hanson says it's about more than bragging rights.

"People never know when that blood is going to be needed or where it is going to be needed , or who for. One thing is for certain though, it's always needed, so to encourage the emergency services to come in the form of a competition with Edmonton is one of the best ways to get all of us down here," said Chief Hanson.

This year's goal is to collect 6000 blood donations in the Calgary area over the next month.
