City council is giving it one more try to strike a deal with the Calgary Airport Authority to build the highly controversial airport tunnel..

After a four hour in-camera meeting City Council voted 9-6 in support of Mayor Naheed Nenshi's final proposal to be made to the Board of the Calgary Airport Authority.

The City calls it a two-stage approach. It will build the airport tunnel connecting Barlow Trail to 36th Street northeast. That' is as far as it will go for now.

The City would later add two interchanges along Airport Road at Barlow Trail and 19 Street northeast, but only when the funding is secured.

The Airport Authority added these interchanges to be built. They were not part of the $295 million budget for the airport tunnel already approved, which means the price tag would go up.

The city says it will also refrain from extending the road east to Stoney Trail until funding is secure for that.

The final deadline May 24th at 5p.m. If a deal is not finalized the City says the tunnel will not be built.
