Calgary police are investigating after a homemade explosive detonated in a northwest community on Saturday night.

Shortly after 11:00 p.m., police and firefighters responded to the 100 block of Hawkstone Close Northwest following reports an explosion or a gunshot had been heard in the neighbourhood.

“We have a lot of children around here,” said one nieghbourhood resident, name withheld. “It’s not something we’ve heard around here before.”

A couple walking their dog located the remnants of a pipe bomb in a pedestrian walkway near a home and alerted officials.

Police cordoned off the area and, following an investigation, determined the area was safe.

No one was injured in the explosion but police confirm the blast damaged adjacent property.

The HAWCS police helicopter and officer scoured the community for a possible offender but no arrests have been made in connection to the investigation.

The arson unit continues to investigate the explosion. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Calgary Police Service, 403-266-1234, or Crime Stoppers.
