ALERT is investigating after a suspected drug production operation was uncovered in a home in the community of Coventry Hills.
Officers responded to a 911 hang up call from a home on Coville Square NE on Monday.
A search warrant was conducted and officers found what appeared to be a illegal synthetic drug lab.
“This is a situation where you’ve got kids and families coexisting with something in their neighbourhood that is clearly a danger to everybody,” said Cps Sgt. Doug Crippen.
Neighbours were advised of the potential dangers but officials say there is no immediate public safety risk.
Police say it could take several days to search and decontaminate the home.
“It’s a very rare occurrence for Calgary to see, synthetic drug labs, and as such we’ve had to reach out to those experts that know about the chemicals and how to safely re-mediate the residence so that citizens are safe,” said Crippen.
Crippen says this is only the second time an operation like this has been found in the city and that it is a complex investigation.
One person has been arrested and police say several other people are being investigated.
If members of the public suspect a drug lab or grow-operation in their neighbourhood, they are encouraged to contact police or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
