A busy street is closed to traffic, and will be for most of the day Sunday, while police investigate a shooting.

Emergency crews responded to reports of a vehicle crashing into a tree just before 11 p.m. Saturday night in the 5400 block of Centre Street North.

At the same time, calls came in of shots being fired in the same area.

When officers arrived on scene they found a black SUV that had struck a tree.

It had been heading south on Centre Street North, crossed the northbound lanes and came to rest when it struck a tree on the boulevard on the east side of Centre Street.

The only person in the SUV, a young man, was pronounced dead on the scene.

Investigators believe shots were fired at the SUV right before it crashed.

This is Calgary's 18th murder of 2008.

It's the third murder the police homicide unit is investigating in the past two weeks.

A friend of the victim told CTV News, "There will be retribution".

Police aren't confirming if the murder was gang related, but the gang unit is helping with the investigation.
