Emergency crews were called to a vehicle fire in a ditch along a rural road northeast of Airdrie on Friday morning.

Fire crews from Crossfield and Rocky View County were called to reports of a car on fire at about 7:00 a.m. near Township Road 280 and Range Road 283.

Crews extinguised the blaze and initial reports indicated that a body was located in the burned out vehicle.

Airdrie RCMP say they are working to determine the identity of the vehicle's registered owner and are looking into the possibility that someone was inside.

They say they cannot confirm reports that a body was found in the vehicle until forensic testing is complete.

Police have cordoned off the area around the car and say they will be holding the scene until at least Saturday.
