Two people have been charged after a police officer was injured.

The incident began around 10 p.m. on Thursday at the South Trail Shopping Centre on 130 Avenue S.E.

Police were called to the area after Wal-Mart employees noticed two people in the store with a history of theft.

When police arrived on the scene, the two suspects were sitting in a vehicle that police later learned was stolen.

Police pulled up behind the vehicle and one officer got out of the cruiser to approach the suspects.

At that point, the driver of the car put it into reverse and rammed the police cruiser.

The police officer was trying to get back into his vehicle for protection when this happened and he ended up with back and neck injuries.

The suspects in the vehicle then sped off westbound on 130 Avenue and almost hit a pedestrian waiting at a bus stop.

HAWC1 followed the vehicle as the driver continued to flee from police.

The driver eventually gave up around Langdon and both people in the vehicle were arrested.

Gordon Robert Ridgeway, 39, of Calgary is charged with dangerous driving, hit and run and failing to stop for police.

Stephanie Ann Martens, 21, of Okotoks is charged with destroying or damaging property.
