Rachel Notley supports Bill 6 which imposes labour standards on farm workers.

Bill 6 has been stirring up controversy since it was originally tabled in the legislature on November 17, 2015.

Many farmers and ranchers say it will destroy their livelihood by implementing unbearably high costs.

Hundreds of people have been protesting across the province against the bill, which would place Occupational Health and Safety rules on family farms. Farmers say it means friends and family won’t be able to help out anymore.

The province has offered to change the bill to exempt family members from Worker’s Compensation coverage.

Many critics say the introduction of the bill has been confusing, something Notley says should not have happened.

“I think there were inconsistent messages coming from government in the way this would roll out and I take full responsibility for this but at the end of the day, communication mistakes non-withstanding, this fundamental principle of what we're trying to achieve, ensuring that those injured workers can access compensation,” she said.

Notley says the aim of Bill 6 is to compensate paid farm workers for injury on the job.
