There are reports a major upgrade may be on the way for Canada's 911 call system.

The country's telecom regulator wants the cell phone industry to install equipment that would give 911 dispatchers the ability to locate cellular calls in an emergency.

The move comes after a recent investigation found several cases of fatal or near-fatal incidents where 911 dispatchers could not determine the caller's location.

"That little piece of information may delay us," says RCMP Sgt. Patrick Webb. "We've actually had our RCMP members out searching for literally hours up and down every rural road trying to find somebody whose had a collision and that kind of delay can actually be life threatening."

The upgrades are scheduled to be in place by February of 2010.
