The recent blizzard blew in mounds of snow and Alberta’s highway crews have been plowing the highways night and day since Sunday.

The province says that more than 600 snowplows are out on Alberta’s highways clearing roads for motorists.

Officials say crews have been preparing for a wicked winter since October and were ready for the blizzard when it hit.

“It’s winter in Alberta, which means snow, cold and the potential for winter storms to come quickly. Our maintenance contractors have the equipment and skills to keep Alberta highways in good winter driving condition, but we need all drivers’ help to get everyone safely to their destinations,"  said Ric McIver, Minister of Alberta Transportation.

The snowplows are equipped with GPS technology and use satellite radar information to identify priorities so they can be mobilized quickly.

The highways are plowed to remove the heavy layers of snow and ice and then are treated with sand, salt or a combination of both depending on the road conditions.

“Our members are on call 24/7 and they constantly monitor road conditions. Operators blade snow off highways and apply salt and sand as needed, so our highways are back in good winter driving condition as soon as possible,” said Gene Syvenky, Chief Executive Officer, Alberta Roadbuilders & Heavy Construction Association.

The province has a few tips for drivers for winter safety:

  • Check road conditions before travel at 511.alberta.ca or via Twitter @511Alberta
  • Prepare vehicles with winter tires, emergency kits and warm clothing
  • Allow extra time to get to destinations safely
  • Stay off roads when advised by RCMP or local officials
