A 17-year-old girl has been transported by ambulance to hospital following a Sunday morning crash in the northeast.

Shortly before 9:00 a.m., emergency crews responded to a location in the 5700 block of Temple Drive Northeast after a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle.

Sergeant Joerg Gottschling of the Calgary Police Service says the crash occurred after two people exited a parked pickup truck.

“A male and a female exited this white pickup truck,” said Gottschling. “The female was the passenger, she’s 17 years old, she walked out of the truck and, for reasons we’re not sure of, she walked around behind the truck and straight out onto the roadway.”

The driver of a Hyundai hatchback, a 35-year-old man, was unable to avoid striking the girl.

“We think his speed was actually quite low, probably in the neighbourhood of 30 to 40 kilometres an hour," explains Gottschling. "I don’t think the gentleman driving the car did anything wrong. He wasn’t distracted, there’s no alcohol in play.”

The teenage victim suffered serious injuries and was transported in stable condition to the Foothills Medical Centre.

“She sustained a broken femur, a broken jaw, (and) a possible head injury."

The driver of the Hyundai hatchback remained at the scene. Police continue to investigate the incident but neither the driver or the pedestrian are expected to face charges.

"We’re not entertaining any charges. Public interest isn’t served by handing someone a jaywalking ticket when they’re in the hospital with a broken femur.”

Following the crash, police closed a section of Temple Drive between 53 Street and 60 Street N.E. Temple Drive reopened to traffic early Sunday afternoon.
