A man from Black Diamond is carving a name for himself out of some of the oldest pieces of wood in the province.

Kevin Nicholson is known as the Wood King in southern Alberta.

Nicholson and a friend are transforming an old Douglas fir into beautiful carvings of wildlife and sturdy, wooden furniture.

He makes his living selling firewood but his real passion is old wood and he has some that is more than a thousand years old.

“This one here is a thousand years old and that’s a slice, now it can be made into a coffee table or a dining room table,” said Nicholson.

Nicholson collected the fallen trees in the Porcupine Hills in 1995 and he estimates he has about 80 cords of the old stuff on his property.
