An American man accused in the death of Dwayne Demkiw in 2015 has been turned over to Edmonton police to face a first-degree murder charge.

Demkiw was last seen leaving work in Edmonton on May 31, 2015 and his burned out vehicle was found in Calgary the same day.

His remains were discovered in a field near Innisfail almost a year later and police classified his death as a homicide.

Edmonton police conducted an investigation and connected Jason Steadman, 41, a U.S. citizen, to Demkiw’s death.

A Canada-wide warrant was issued in October 2015 for Steadman’s arrest for first-degree murder and arson.

Steadman was in custody in Washington and EPS and Alberta’s Attorney General made a request to have him extradited to Canada for prosecution.

On Thursday, U.S. Federal Marshals turned him over to Edmonton police at the Douglas border crossing in B.C.

Steadman is expected to appear in court in Vancouver on the charges on Friday.
