The Great Plains Industrial Park in the city’s southeast is set to become a makeshift trailer park for flood victims.

The provincial government has asked the city to prepare the industrial park, situated along 68 Ave. between 57 St. S.E. and 64 St. S.E., to house approximately 1000 trailers for High River residents.

“The temporary housing will allow evacuees from High River to have a housing option during the period of time it takes for reconstruction down in High River,” says Bruce Burrell, director of Calgary Emergency Management Agency.

The location was one of six potential sites proposed by the City of Calgary to the provincial government.  The area is situated on the east end of the Foothills Industrial Park, north of Glenmore Trail.

On Saturday, city crews began the scraping, gravelling and compaction of the site which is set to open sometime in the next few weeks.
