Calgary police have charged three people with assault after a concerned family member came forward claiming that an elderly man was the victim of physical abuse at a southwest care facility.

Police launched an investigation in early February after the family of a man, who is a resident of Carewest Garrison Green, approached them with concerns of physical abuse by staff.

The CPS Elder Abuse Response Team investigated the allegations with support from the care facility.

"We used statements from the victim to help us investigate this matter," said CPS S/Sgt. Ryan Ayliffe. "The family acted on concerns expressed by the victim."

The three staff members have been removed from duty and were arrested by Calgary police on Wednesday.

Maria Dumo, 36, Angelina Borja, 36 and May Casimero, 37, are each charged with one count of common assault.

"The injuries weren't serious. They didn't require hospital treatment but they definitely met the threshold for common assault," said Ayliffe. "These charges stem from one incident."

The three workers have been released on a promise to appear in court on Wednesday, April 23, 2014.

Calgary police say the man, in his 90s, was not in distress and officers worked with the facility to ensure the safety of the victim.
