Cochrane RCMP say that a situation involving a man dressed in camouflage carrying a weapon ended peacefully.

At about 5 p.m. on Sunday, a man was seen near Highway 22, carrying a weapon over his shoulder. He was dressed in camouflage.

Police aren't sure, but they believe the weapon was a crossbow.

Police tracked him to a neighbourhood skate park and attempted to talk with him, but the suspect ignored them and headed into a nearby field.

Calgary police sent HAWCS to track the suspect as RCMP cordoned off the area and told residents to remain in their homes.

“We cleared the area as you can see. There’s a skate park, there’s some ball diamonds – we cleared those immediately. Other than that, the residential area, we have members all around the area where the houses are and anyone that’s approaching the area where we think he is, we’ve sent back into the other parts of town,” said Cpl. Greg Stannard of the Cochrane RCMP.

At 9:45 p.m., police surrounded a home at 92 Quigley Drive and called for a person to come out.

"This is the best possible outcome for everyone involved," said Staff Sergeant Roger Waidson, Detachment Commander, Cochrane RCMP in a release. " I am sure the situation was very frightening for the citizens of Cochrane. I want to thank them for their assistance and cooperation throughout the incident."

Police have released few other details about the incident, only that they have a 26-year-old man in custody.

Family and friends have identified him as Benjamin Laslo and say he's had a few tough years.

Update: Laslow was initially charged with two counts of carrying a weapon for a purpose dangerous to the public peace, but those charges were later dropped.

He went to trial on a single charge of obstruction over the summer 2015, but was acquitted, according to his lawyer Mark Walters.
