A 34-year-old woman from Drumheller has been given a conditional sentence and house arrest for taking money gathered during a young man’s cancer fundraiser.

In 2015, Brandon Hall was diagnosed with cancer and began undergoing treatment.

About a year later, residents and businesses in the community held a number of fundraisers to support his family with expenses.

A short time after that, Drumheller RCMP launched in investigation into the donated funds after receiving a complaint that the money gathered never reached the family.

Ashley Fredrickson, 34, a friend of the family, was charged with theft under $5,000 as a result of the investigation.

She pleaded guilty to the charge and the judge ordered her to pay back about $2,500 to the Halls. She must also complete 50 hours of community service.

Fredrickson was also handed a conditional sentence for one year, plus six months of house arrest.
