Flames fans made the Red Mile on 17th Avenue in the Beltline famous during the playoff run and some are curious about whether the party can be resurrected if the team manages to turns things around.

It has been ten years since fans flooded the street for an impromptu party but since then Flames fans haven't had much to cheer about.

Melrose Café & Bar was at the centre of the action and closed down in January.

Some say the Red Mile is a thing of the past but management at Melrose's new location at Stampede Park say a big street party is still a possibility.

“There will be elements of it that will be the same. I know when the Flames won the cup in 89 Electric Avenue had something similar. The Red Mile was its own thing, it was spontaneous, so I expect something similar, but something different that will belong to that time period,” said Tony Johanson.

Some business owners say they don’t miss the melee.

“For those of us who were down here and people who live down here too, didn’t enjoy it,” said Pamela Haight from Rubiyat.

Jim Steele is betting it will be back and he has even secured the web address theredmile.ca.

“I think you will still see the people congregate in this area because it’s still fresh in their mind even though it’s ten years ago,” said Steele.

Police patrolling in the Beltline say the strip of street is still popular with party goers and they expect it will be ground zero for the celebration if the Flames ever make the playoffs again.

“Since we haven’t had a big draw like we had then that brought everybody together with the same goal to go out and show their enthusiasm,” said CPS S/Sgt Dave Hare.

Police estimate about 50,000 Calgarians flooded the Red Mile during its peak.
