Traffic in the downtown was hampered during the afternoon commute after part of a window fell from a high-rise building to the street below on Monday afternoon.

The glass fell from the 33rd floor of the new Brookfield Place building at about 4:00 p.m. on Monday and some of it landed on a vehicle that was driving by.

No one was hurt in the incident but crews have closed 6th Ave between Centre and 2nd Streets and 1st Street between 5th and 7th Avenues to clean up the mess and to make sure the area is secure.

“Thankfully it didn’t land on anybody so there are no injuries as a result of this incident but due to public safety concerns, fire department and police have blocked off all the areas around this building,” said Carol Henke, Calgary Fire Department.

The fire department says winds in the core were too strong to send someone over the side to secure what's left of the window and the high angle team is standing by to make the repair.

An inspector with the Calgary Building Services Safety Response Unit was called in to investigate.

People are being asked to avoid the area and roads around the building will remain closed until the glass can be secured and it is safe to reopen the area to vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
