Police are looking for suspects after a man was stabbed in southeast Calgary while meeting someone in response to his Kijiji ad.

Police say that at about 10:30 p.m., the man, in his 20s, was looking to sell his cellphone and met a buyer at the Shawnessy Shopping Centre.

They say that he got into the buyer's vehicle, which investigator believe contained three men.

As soon as he was inside the vehicle, he was stabbed.

The victim was brought to hospital in critical condition by his girlfriend, who was at the scene but did not witness what happened.

He has since been upgraded to serious, non-life-threatening condition.

Police are following up on leads to confirm details and identify possible suspects. They are also looking to review security footage and interview the victim when he is able to speak.

Few details are being released in order to protect the integrity of the investigation.

Police are reminding Calgarians to protect themselves when buying or selling items online and offer the following tips:

  • Meet in person and in a public place with lots of people around
  • Bring at least one person with you
  • Ensure you have their name and contact information, not just an e-mail address
  • Avoid bringing large amounts of cash to a first meeting
  • Trust your instincts
  • Do not give out personal information over the Internet
