After one man was shot dead and another injured just as PQ leader and new Quebec premier Pauline Marois took the stage, many are questioning security.

Richard Henry Bain, 62, was arrested after he allegedly fired a gun during the celebration, killing Denis Blanchette, a freelance technician.

Another man, also believed to have been working as a technician, was sent to hospital but is likely going to recover.

The incident has politicians on edge,

MLAs say that they are all aware of the risk but they make sure that they stay safe.

“I think it's really important that we have a safe environment. And I do know that I've been at places where people are a little bit concerned so I think it's important that we make sure we have an environment where people can participate in the political process without risk.,” said Don Scott, MLA for McMurray-Conklin.

Surete du Quebec, the province’s police force, is working with Montreal police to determine whether Marois was an intended target.

“At this point, we can’t establish whether or not the elected premier was a target,” Lt. Guy Lapointe told reporters on Wednesday.

Investigators said they also plan to search the suspect’s vehicle for any possible accelerants. The gunman is believed to have acted alone.
