A 24-year-old Calgary man is in the custody of Airdrie RCMP after allegedly riding at nearly double the posted speed limit and attempting to evade officers on the QEII Highway Thursday afternoon.

According to members of the Airdrie Integrated Traffic Unit, officers were conducting speed enforcement on the northbound lanes of the highway, at a location north of Airdrie, when a Kawasaki Ninja sped by at a high rate of speed.

Officers allege the motorcycle was travelling at speeds ranging from 187 km/h to in excess of 200 km/h.

Members of the traffic unit were unable to catch the bike until he was slowed by traffic near the Olds overpass.

RCMP say the motorcyclist spotted the officers and attempted to flee from the area on foot. Officers apprehended the man and transported him to an RCMP detachment.

An investigation into the incident is underway. Traffic and criminal charges are pending against the unidentified man.
