Fire officials say the residents of a home in the southwest Calgary community of Haysboro are lucky to have spotted a fire that broke out in the basement.

At about 2 a.m., fire crews were called to the 100 block of Haverhurst Crescent S.W. by a resident of the home who spotted smoke coming from the basement when they were coming home.

The fire, which was quickly contained, was found in the utility room.

Officials say that if the resident hadn’t come home when they did, there could have been grave consequences as the home didn’t have any working smoke alarms.

There will need to be some repairs to the home before residents can return, but the damage to the home is considered to be minor.

Fire crews also attended a building fire in southeast Calgary overnight, at a Tower Cleaners location.

Crews found smoke coming from the building when they arrived.

Upon entering the store, they found some smoldering debris, which they were able to put out.

There are no details on damage.
