Edmonton Police have charged a 62-year-old man after a toddler died in a collision on a restaurant patio Sunday evening.

Richard Suter has been charged with impaired operation causing death, refuse demand causing death (breath sample) and two counts of impaired operation causing bodily harm.

The young boy died after being pinned to a wall by a car at a restaurant patio in southwest Edmonton.

Police said the two-year-old boy was eating supper with his family near 142 Street and 23 Avenue around 8 p.m. when the incident occurred.

Insp. Brian Nowlan said a 62-year-old driver and a female passenger were in a vehicle that was parked right in front of the patio.

“For reasons at this time yet to be determined that vehicle quickly accelerated through the glass barrier, struck the table and literally ran over the family of four,” he explained.

Four people were taken to hospital including two children, aged one and two,  and the parents.

According to police the father and one-year-old have suffered minor injuries while the mother did not sustain any injuries.

Suter has been scheduled to be in court Tuesday at 9 a.m.
